The Alpha Course

What is Alpha? The Alpha course is an opportunity for Malaysians to explore the meaning of life from a Christian perspective. Over 17 million people worldwide have now attended an Alpha course. In Malaysia, thousands of people have attended courses in hundreds of locations across the country. Alpha runs in hundreds of churches throughout the country as well as in homes, schools, national service camps, workplaces, homes for the elderly and prisons. It takes place over ten weekly sessions, and also includes a weekend away. Each week begins with a meal, tea or coffee with the other guests and the hosts of the course. People attend for a variety of reasons. Some want to investigate the concept of God from a Christian perspective; others want to know if there is a point to life; others may have attended church their whole life, but have never really understood Christianity. The Talks There are 15 talks on the Alpha course, which are given over the ten weeks of the course and the weekend away. Each talk covers key areas of the Christian faith, and small group discussion takes place after each talk. Is there More to Life than This? Who is Jesus? Why did Jesus Die? How can we have Faith? Why and how do I Pray? Why and how should I Read the Bible? How does God Guide us? Who is the Holy Spirit? What does the Holy Spirit do? How can I be Filled with the Holy Spirit? How can I Resist Evil? Why and how should I tell Others? Does God Heal Today? What about the Church? How can I Make the Most of the Rest of my Life? The Alpha course is free, by the way. Though you may be invited to make a voluntary contribution towards food.

Small Group

- By Eric Yee, kplus99@gmail.com The Theme for years 2012 to 2015 is Growing Roots, and Bearing Fruits (2 Kings 19:31 & Isaiah 37:31) God’s Vision on Earth:  His Glory – Worship God – Every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that He is God (Rom 14:11) Jesus Mission on Earth: Love God Love people (Mat. 28: 19-20)  Therefore go and make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them all that I have commanded you. And surely I will be with you always, to the end of the age.” The Small Group Vision – ( 2 E’s) EDIFICATION– (Inwards) The Small Group must encourage, help, care and minister to each other in order to grow in Christ. Roman 14:19 - “Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to Mutual Edification.” EVANGELISM – (outwards) The small Group must go and multiply by reaching out to others. We must invite non Christian friends and relatives to join our Small Groups. It is easier to evangelize to friends in home setting than to bring them to Church. Small Group Weekly Meeting - (The 4 W’s) Welcome (10 minutes) An Ice-breaker is indispensable because it promotes group community as well as opens up the members to sharing. Worship  (10 - 20 minutes) Word       (45 – 60 minutes) We are to edify (build up, strengthen) one another. Works      (20 – 30 minutes) After the lesson, the group focuses again on prayer and vision. The prime purpose of all Christian community is to glorify our Lord and God.  He is not there to be used but to be worship and obeyed.  Our primary function is not to serve each other but to serve God.
